Imagine this. You have recently bought a small-holding on Exmoor. You move in, and start doing whatever you want to do with the land, when all of a sudden you see the Devon and Somerset Staghounds on your land, chasing a stag. You rush out, waving your arms at the hunters, telling them to get off your land. You hate all hunters and all hunting. Looking smug, the huntsman tells you that they have every right to hunt on your land and they don’t need your permission.

“What?” you say, in disbelief.

Inside, you check the title deeds to your new property, property you have paid for and own. You find that there is a “Restriction” on the land that says the hunts have the right to hunt foxes, stags and hares on your land without your permission. The owner of the rights is “The Badgworthy Land Company” who are in fact, the Devon and Somerset Staghounds.

Is there anything you can do about it? The estate agents (who failed to point it out before you bought the land) say no, there is nothing you can do. Your conveyancer, who was too naïve to realise what “sporting rights” mean, tells you that they have no idea what you can do.

You talk to other small-holders. They also hate all hunters and all hunting, but they have had to put up with the DSSH on their land for years, and they have also been told there is nothing they can do to stop them.

But IS there something they can do? We think so. And we are asking a barrister (a top-notch barrister) to create a template “map” for any landowner, new or old to help them oust the stag hunts from their land. This isn’t a pipe-dream either. We have read the restrictions and have noted that they were written many years ago, before the ban. This means they are allowing an illegal activity to take place on the land – they actually say “stag hunting”, “fox hunting” etc.

Hunts need access to land. Reducing their land will reduce their kills – fox, hare and stag.

But the barrister doesn’t come cheap. They will cost around £3000. Would you like to help?
