How the people of Tiverton hate the stag hunts

Outreach in Tiverton went very well. We spoke with many people who were keen to share their personal experiences and views on stag hunting. A strong theme emerged: many locals expressed clear support for a ban.

We made a point of inviting everyone to take part in our survey, as we genuinely want to hear all perspectives. One supporter of stag hunting declined to participate and chose to walk away quickly, despite our encouragement to share their views.

One particularly insightful conversation was with a local Army sergeant. He spoke openly about his role in culling deer on MOD land, explaining that this is carried out under Defra guidance to maintain a healthy herd. He emphasised that this work is done with care, humanity, and respect for the animals. He also highlighted a wider issue: government tree-planting targets are being affected by high deer populations on MOD land. Importantly, he expressed strong disapproval of stag hunting, describing it as killing under the guise of culling, without the same level of responsibility or regard for animal welfare.

We also spoke with the Mayor of Tiverton, who remained non-committal. However, based on his previously expressed views on fox hunting, we can infer where his sympathies may lie.

On a lighter note, we met a man who owned a shop on Carnaby Street in the 1960s. He told us his customers included famous faces, and even claimed that The Kinks wrote “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” about him!
